Cayetano Pride! Dr. Martin Rodriguez was awarded in the U.S. for his achievements in infectious disease clinical practice
We are pleased to congratulate Dr. Martin Rodriguez Del Castillo, an outstanding graduate of our School of Medicine (1997), for receiving the Watanakunakorn Medical Award from the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA). This award highlights his achievements in the clinical practice of infectious diseases.
The Watanakunakorn Medical Award, which honors Dr. Chatrchai Watanakunakorn, is awarded annually to an IDSA member who is distinguished by professional excellence. Selection criteria include quality of patient care, research contributions, commitment to community service and patient advocacy, as well as educational efforts in the field of infectious diseases. In addition, the impact and recognition of the candidate in medical and specialized environments is considered.
A career of impactDr. Rodríguez Del Castillo completed his training in internal medicine at Cayetano Heredia and later served as chief resident physician at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). He then continued his fellowship in infectious diseases and HIV medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital. Since the beginning of his career at the UAB in 2005, he has demonstrated remarkable leadership in the academic and clinical fields, directing key programs such as the Tinsley Harrison Clinical Fellowship Service, the Travel Clinic and the Infectious Diseases Clinic. In 2023, his dedication was recognised with the UAB Excellence in Teaching Award. This year, in September, he assumed the direction of the Division of Infectious Diseases at that university.
